Team Sailing Auckland Cup

A tough, light and shifty two days took place in the waters of Okahu Bay at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club over the 30th/31st March. Despite the winds best efforts and some lengthy delays in the mornings before racing, the race committee team managed to pump through 79 races across two days!

Teams were initially split into two pools to complete a qualification stage, after which they would be drawn into a knockout final series. From pool A – Auckland Grammar, Takapuna Grammar, Glendowie College and St. Kentigern A team progressed to the quarter finals, to be joined by Westlake Boys, Kings College, Whangarei and Kristin School from pool B.

The quarter finals saw the elimination of Glendowie, St. Kentigern, Kristin and Whangarei in one race sail-offs. The semi finals saw Auckland Grammar and Westlake Boys head off to compete for the title with Takapuna and Kings competing for third place. The final series was to be taken out convincingly 2-0 by Westlake, similarly Takapuna saw off Kings College 2-0 to lock in their third place debut.

The girls final was one of the closest races of the regatta though – with Diocesan taking the first race, Westlake Girls the second and finally an excellent piece of team racing strategy on the final downwind leg saw Westlake Girls take out the girls title.

A massive congratulations to all teams who competed at the regatta, for staying focussed in some tricky conditions and the race officials all commented about the levels of sportsmanship and good spirit in which the regatta was contested.

Overall:
1st: Westlake Boys
